Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. Perry was forbidden to begin acting with her parents till she reached an adulthood stage, because they were concerned about the stress it would result in. Perry claims she never wanted to become an actor during high school but decided to take up performing as a form of social interaction during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry began her career in New York after graduation, performing in minor role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry go back to California and pursue a career as a theater actress. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. Perry was in the show with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father played her character in The ABC Drama Scandal. The same year, she appeared as a younger character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a younger version. She was cast in the role in spite of her strong relationship with the character's family.
